When Jim Nelson and friends returned home from World War II to Carlsbad, California, they had two things on their minds – girls and speed. In 1945, they formed a club to pursue the latter, and The Oilers Car Club was born.

Their exploits might have been lost to time if not for their inclusion in the award-winning 2003 book, The Birth of Hot Rodding: The Dry Lakes Era by Robert Genat and Don Cox. A lifetime away on the opposite coast, Mel Stultz and friends obsessed over the book’s images of the early days of post-war hot-rodding, reaching out to author Genat who put them in touch with the original Oilers.

Every now and again, weather interjects itself into the best-laid plans of the vintage motorcyclist. Experienced riders know to take the hint; oftentimes the universe is aligning a different experience, and a sudden downpour is merely the suggestion that one should be open to the unexpected.

Such was the case while attending a recent event held by the Badger Heritage Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Heavy rain was predicted all day, but I still obligingly attended because I knew the organizers would be there working hard, rain or shine. Besides, most antique motorcyclists are a plucky bunch (“Weather? Hell, that’s the least of my worries.”)

When 1986 NASCAR Rookie-Of-The-Year driver Alan Kulwicki arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, he had a borrowed pickup truck and little else. A devout Roman Catholic Polish-American from the Upper Midwest with an engineering degree, he stood in stark contrast from the Good Ol’ Boy image prevalent in stock-car oval racing at the time.

Known to walk the pits carrying a briefcase, he applied scientific principle and determination to become the 1992 Winston Cup Champion. He died the following year in a light-aircraft crash in Tennessee at the age of 38, cutting short a promising career but setting a new standard for driver professionalism and preparation in NASCAR.

The unique thing about race tracks is that they combine the many interests of the classic car hobby all in one place. There are the sights, smells and sounds of competition cars being utilized to their maximum potential. There is a flurry of fascinating mechanical activity taking place in the paddock. And there is an interesting variety of amazing street cars in the parking lot. It’s one-stop shopping for classic car nirvana.

SVRA’s Spring Vintage Festival races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, traditionally signals the start of the vintage racing season in the upper Midwest. Despite a practice session of unseasonably cold and wet weather, entrant attendance indicated continued enthusiasm for the classic car hobby and amateur racing.

In the age of social media and the internet, there are very few secrets. But for nearly the past three decades, a group of sports car enthusiasts have quietly gathered each May to stage a vintage hillclimb in a small town in southern Wisconsin without fanfare or paparazzi.

Das Kurze Klausenrennen (“The Short Klausen Run”), a.k.a. The New Glarus Hillclimb, is inspired by the famous Klausenrennen hillclimb that took place at Klausen Pass in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, from 1922-1934.

I take it as a point of pride that I do much of my own work on all my old cars. It is an extension of the richer understanding of the machine, and an additional source of enjoyment (most of the time) in the ownership experience.

Most of us go through life not fully understanding the how, let alone the why, of what makes our world work. These days, it seems there is precious little curiosity about such things.

(Editor’s note: The Riverside Military Academy Champions and Heroes event has been postponed until June 2018 because of massive traffic jams created by the fire and collapse of a section of Interstate 85 in Atlanta.)

Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, will host on June 2 to 4 the inaugural Champions and Heroes, a vintage car weekend consisting of a rally, time trials and concours d’elegance, in the small lakeside town one hour northeast of Atlanta.

The venue on the 206-acre campus of the military prep academy aims to approximate in setting and style the European-estate feel of such events as the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

Green Bay, Wisconsin, is the smallest town to hold an NFL Football franchise, but it has one of the highest percentage of fans per capita. One could apply that same measure to the region’s car enthusiasts, who turned out in droves for the third annual NEW (North East Wisconsin) Motorama held at the Brown County Arena in the shadow of the Green Bay Packer’s Lambeau Field.

So, what is the difference between an “autorama” and a “motorama?” Apparently, a motorama celebrates anything with a motor in it, which in the Upper Midwest means classic cars, trucks, hot rods, dirt-track racers, motorcycles, snowmobiles, golf karts, tractors, trikes and a few things you just had to see to believe.

On display are the historical artifacts from their motocross, road-racing, flat-track, short-track and land-speed record efforts.

The collector car market is a lot like the real estate market: it’s always seeking growth in that next new, hot neighborhood. And just like real estate, new areas appreciate while others plateau or depreciate.

With collector cars, there are a number of intangibles that go into predicting The Next Big Thing. It’s a complicated algorithm that considers rarity of remaining examples, affordability relative to comparable models, design, performance, desirability and everyday usability.

Barrett-Jackson, Mecum and other auction houses have raised the profile of vintage automobilia with inclusion at their classic car sales, making the case that no garage or car collection is complete without accompanying regalia.

When the LeMay-America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington, announced last December that it would be driving three classic American cars – a 1961 Chrysler 300G, a 1966 Mustang 289 Coupe, and a 1957 Chevy Nomad – 3,000 miles through winter weather to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, public reaction was fairly predictable.

Critics decried the perceived abuse of such fine vintage vehicles, and dismissed The Drive Home as a publicity stunt. Guilty: as a non-profit that relies on donations from private and corporate sponsors, this museum and others like it are always looking for ways to generate attention, goodwill and operating endowments to stay alive.
