With a pair of pre-war French classics each selling for more than $3 million, RM Sotheby’s fourth Ville Erba sale on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como posted more than $28.5 million in sales Saturday. Forty-one of the 66 cars and motorcycles were sold, for a 62 percent sell-through rate.

“It’s great to see that the demand for special pre-war cars is stronger than ever, and we continue to see rare, low-production supercars with excellent provenance, performing very strongly,” Augustin Sabatie-Garat, RM Sotheby’s car specialist and Villa Erba auction manager, said in a news release.

The Automotive Fine Arts Society likely agrees with that philosophy, and suggests you consider the work of its member artists when you do your shopping for Father’s Day 2017.

A few days ago, Bob Golfen’s Pick of the Day was a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. The choice for today is a 1962 Sunbeam Alpine.

Tiger. Alpine. What’s the difference?

Basically, the Tiger is the souped-up version of the Sunbeam and is empowered by a small-block Ford engine that none other than Carroll Shelby hisownself figured out how to shoehorn under the “bonnet” of a British sports car designed around a four-cylinder powerplant.

According to the advertisement for the car on ClassicCars.com, the Ferrari — chassis No. 14831 — was purchased by the current owner on November 21, 1984, at Foreign Cars Italia Inc. in North Carolina. That means the car has been in single ownership for approaching 33 years.

But this isn’t just any truck. It’s a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab, trimmed out with the King Ranch package and empowered by a whopping and turbocharged 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel-fueled V8.

Oh, and it’s a 4×4, so not only can it pull an RV or boat or horse trailer or, for that matter, a small village (or anything else weighing up to 15,000 pounds), it can go pretty much anywhere you can fit a vehicle that’s nearly 21 feet in length, almost 9 feet wide with its big and lighted power-folding mirrors extended, and is almost as tall as an NBA center.

But technology isn’t the only thing that can transfer from raceway to roadway.
