For more than a decade, British artist Gerry Judah’s amazing automotive sculptures have towered over the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. But now one of his works has been erected on a permanent basis with “Inspiration 911” unveiled at the entrance to the Porscheplatz in front of the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, a suburb of Stuttgart, Germany.

Since we switched from Pick of the Week to Pick of the Day and convinced Bob Golfen to let the rest of the staff share in the fun, I’ve focused on cars being sold by owners and on cars that seemed reasonably affordable. Until today.

Oh, this car is being offered by a private seller, but the $155,000 or best offer asking price represents my first venture into six figures. However, this does, indeed, look like an amazing car.

Yes, it only makes sense to offer a sensational 1929 Duesenberg Model J for sale at an auction held during the annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival in Auburn, Indiana. And this one is, indeed, sensational — a Murphy-bodied convertible coupe in a silver finish that makes the car appear to be glowing.

But while it was the photographs that caught my eye as I paged through the Auctions America Auburn Fall sale catalog, it was the words that really got my attention, especially when I read, “It is hard to imagine the effect that chassis no. 2168 must have had on its next owner, William Veeck Junior…”

Back in 1915, Edsel Ford and some of his buddies drove from Michigan to San Francisco to attend the world’s fair, the Panama Pacific International Exposition. Ford fretted at one point that he feared the possibility of being robbed in Arizona, which even three years after becoming an official state remained very much a Wild West wilderness.

Ford and his party passed through Arizona unharmed, though awed by the state’s Grand Canyon. However, his fears came true for the Historical Vehicle Association team that retracing Ford’s route 100 years later.

Every summertime Saturday evening around 6, the cool cars arrive. They roll off Michigan’s two-lane Route 30 and onto the grassy lot behind the Whippy Dip, an ice cream parlor that serves hot dogs, barbecue, beverages and other light fare to the local folk in the community of Sanford and to traffic off U.S. 10, a highway that runs from Saginaw Bay to Lake Michigan, connecting Midland and Bay City with the north-central section of the state’s Lower Peninsula.

Among the regulars at the weekly car show are members of the Cruisin’ Classics, a group of nearly three-dozen classic car owners who live in and around Gladwin, a three-stoplight town about 25 miles northwest of the Whippy Dip.

I do not understand why Nissan calls its compact crossover the Rogue, but after spending two weeks driving one — including a trip from Phoenix to Monterey and back — I certainly understand why this is the company’s second best-selling vehicle in the United States.

According to Merriam-Webster, my favorite source for such things, a rogue is a “vagrant or tramp, a dishonest or worthless person (scoundrel), a mischievous person, a horse inclined to shirk or misbehave, an individual exhibiting a chance and usually inferior biological variation.”

Yikes! Who would want to drive a vehicle that meets any of those definitions?

It took Chevrolet until the 1949 model year to introduce new post-war styling. According to the Standard Encyclopedia of American Cars, the new design integrated the front bumpers and lowered the fenders, hood and roof.

The roof itself presented the buyer with an option: the Styleline with a notch-back design or the Fleetline fastback. Opt for the DeLuxe version and you got your Fleetline with fender skirts that accentuated the car’s bustle-back tail treatment.

Last year, organizers of Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run altered the course a bit to include the Harrods Stop at Crawley, where the Honda Gatwick dealership cleared the new cars out of its garage area so those on the tour could enjoy some refreshments and perform any needed running repairs out of the wind, wet and cold.

“While the participants were happy with the warm and dry environment from which to enjoy their well-earned refreshments, the local community felt rather short-changed,” the organizers reported in a recent news release.

With Mecum and Bonhams each reporting more $40 million in sales, with Gooding at $128 million and RM Sotheby’s soaring to $172.9 million, the top-end of the collector car auction action on the Monterey Peninsula was very strong again this year. And that strength could be reinforced once Rick Cole Auctions reports the results of its bid-by-smartphone sale.

According to Hagerty, which not only insures classic cars but tracks their value (in part by monitoring in person each auction venue in January in Arizona, in March at Amelia Island and in August at Monterey), previously tabulated all auction sales on the peninsula last week as totaling some $396.8 million.

Wow, things are expensive in Monterey, from the cost for food — whether purchased at a grocery or in a restaurant — to the bumped-up — no, make that supercharged — prices for lodging, and even the admission prices charged for some of the car shows.

On the other hand, a gallon of gasoline cost less than we expected. Sure, $3.49 a gallon might be a lot more than people are paying elsewhere in the country, but it was a buck cheaper than we were charged when we refilled at various crossroads out in the Mohave Desert on our way to and from Monterey Classic Car Week.

In the spring of 1946, Jack Roosevelt Robinson, a former multi-sport standout at UCLA and a U.S. Army veteran, and Rachel, his bride of two weeks, were flying from Los Angeles to Florida. The collector car auctions wrapped up Sunday night on the Monterey Peninsula — sort of. There are some after-block sales to secure and Rick Cole’s absentee-bidder, smartphone-bidding auction has yet to announce its results (they’re expected sometime Tuesday), but the early impression remains that the top end of the marketplace continues to be speeding along.

And it also seems apparent that those who seek classic cars at more widely accessible prices are doing their shopping somewhere other than on the Monterey Peninsula, where classic cars aren’t the only pricey objects.

Buoyed by eight million-dollar vehicles, Mecum Auctions’s sales total was up nicely from 2014, but the other more mainstream sales were not; Russo and Steele’s sales were down to $8.5 this year from $9.6 million last year, and the new JR Auctions company sold only seven vehicles.

Golfers walk the 18th hole at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in twos, threes or foursomes. Sunday, the famous and picturesque fairway that curves along a stretch of Pacific Ocean shoreline was trod by thousands.

But they weren’t golfers — though some of the men were dressed in the sort of outrageously colorful pants once favored by pro golfers. On Sunday, those on the fairway were spectators who came to witness not great golf shots but to see many of the most amazing cars ever assembled in one place.

It’s become a Pebble Beach tradition. It started with a handful of photographers and reporters but now attracts a few hundred people to rise long before the sun. One young couple left their hotel in San Francisco at 2:30 a.m. just to take part.

From wherever they come, they make their way to the Monterey Peninsula, go through the 17 Mile Drive guard house and follow the narrow, winding road through the dark to The Lodge, where they walk through the darkness toward the fairway of the famed golfing links and stand behind ropes that define a lane just wide enough for a single car.

And they stand there in the near darkness. And they wait.

The top end of the collector car marketplace continued to sizzle Saturday at the auctions taking place on the Monterey Peninsula, where Gooding & Company posted nearly $70 million in sales on the opening day of its auction and where million-dollar bids were commonplace not only at Gooding and RM Sotheby’s but at Mecum Auctions as well.

According to figures provided by Hagerty, the insurance and classic car value-tracking company that monitors all Monterey auctions, sales totals for the six auctions taking place during Monterey Classic Car Week totaled $338.4 million through Saturday. That figure trails the same-date number from 2014, but then there was a Ferrari GTO that was up for bidding a year ago and that car by itself accounted for more than $38 million of the 2014 auction total.
