With Giampaolo Dallara and designer Marcello Gandini, Stanzani created not only the revolutionary Miura in 1966 but subsequent Lamborghini vehicles, including the Countach.

Worldwide Auctioneers made its debut Wednesday night at Arizona Car Week with a well-attended — standing-room-only — sales room and  a nicely loaded 82-car docket that was so well received that two cars each sold for a million dollars or more.

The million-dollar cars were a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L-88 roadster and a 1955 Lancia Aurelia GT B24S Spider America.

I failed.

My mission was to go Monday morning to the Worldwide Auctioneers preview in Scottsdale, Arizona, and do to one of our “Pick6” selections, choosing around half-a-dozen vehicles that will be offered at the sale and to select and share them with you.

With only 82 vehicles in the auction catalog, I briefly wondered if I’d even find six that I really liked, and that’s our minimum requirement for this feature.

After nearly every collector car auction, the auction houses publish on their websites a list of all lots that sold, and for how much. Some also will share information on the high bid on lots that didn’t sell. In most cases, the auction houses also issue a news release listing an overall sales total, a sell-through rate and a list of the 10 lots that brought the most money.

One of the things about unsung heroes is that they are accustomed to working quietly, diligent and even dogged, and well behind the scenes, where they might go almost unnoticed. But while they personally might be unheralded, the things they do are not.

Fortunately, from time to time, someone does notice such heroes and offers them praise that they find almost embarrassing.

Last summer, I visited the national recreation vehicle museum in Elkhart, Indiana, where the director and I got into a conversation about the popularity of vintage RVs and their restoration. He noted that perhaps 60 percent of those doing such restorations are women, and that the GMC front-drive motorhome is particularly popular.

Our Pick of the Day is a 1977 GMC front-wheel-drive motorhome offered by a classic car dealership in Kentwood, Michigan, near Grand Rapids.

Just like the subject matter featured in this oversized, coffee-table book, you’ll want to go bajito y suavecito (low and slow) as you absorb the words and images presented in !Orale! Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico, recently published by the Museum of New Mexico Press.

The book is eye-opening on several levels. There’s the obvious one: The amazing photography of amazing cars and their owners, and of what many would consider the shade-tree mechanics — cottonwoods in the case of northern New Mexico — who transform aging Detroit iron into brilliantly painted works of kinetic art that not only move forward and back but up and down, and sometimes dramatically so.

We were so eager for our time with the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, we being one of my sons-in-law, one of my grandsons and me.

My son-in-law had owned a Toyota pickup when he was an undergrad at Arizona State University, and his truck carried him back and forth each school year from Seattle to Tempe. An MBA, nice career in finance and a family later, he’s been thinking it’s about time to swap his aging Corolla for something new, maybe another truck.

‘Among other notable trends, the company continued to welcome increasing participation from a younger generation of collectors (under 50 years of age), as well as experience dramatic online growth. Approximately 20 percent of bidders at RM events this year participated online, representing a 12 percent increase on the previous year, proving that you longer need to be physically present in the sale room.”

— RM Sotheby’s in its 2016 year-end news release

And it wasn’t just RM Sotheby’s that witnessed a demographic shift at its auctions in 2016. New and younger bidders were participating in seemingly every collector car auction in 2016. At some sales, half of those bidding were Gen-Xers (basically those aged 35 to 50), and even Millennials (aged 18 to 34) are showing up with numbers hanging from lanyards.
