When I was one of the editors of AutoWeek magazine, we used to do a semi-regular feature called NFUSS, short for Not For U.S. Sale. These were cars we’d have loved to drive, and for our readers to drive as well, if only they had they been available in the United States automotive market instead of being restricted to their Asian or European homelands.

One of the cars we were eager to feature was the Suzuki Cappuccino, launched in 1991 after being teased two years earlier at the Tokyo Motor Show.

On February 15, 1968, American businessmen Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm launched Subaru of America. Half a century later, the company has started a year-long celebration leading up to its 50th anniversary.

As early as 1965, Bricklin was importing the Fuji Rabbit motor scooter and the little Subaru 360 car. With Lamm, who had been working in his family’s furniture store, he launched Subaru of America to sell distributor franchises, with 13 spread across the country.

In the summer of 1960, British automaker Austin offered the Vanden Plas Princess, a large vehicle built on a long-wheelbase chassis and available as a luxurious saloon (four-door sedan) or as a limousine, the latter version with the passenger compartment — full of leather, wood and mohair carpet — separated from the chauffeur with communication between the two areas done by a telephone-style intercom.

But there was another Austin Vanden Plas Princess, which also was a luxury vehicle, but a much smaller one, produced from 1963 until 1974. This car was based on the same Alec Issigonis-designed platform as the MG 1300, Morris 1100, and similar vehicles, and one of these smaller Austin Vanden Plas Princesses is the Pick of the Day.

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling automotive apparatus in the United States for going on 3 1/2 decades. That comes as no surprise. However, I was surprised to learn that Ford’s second-best seller is its compact crossover utility, the Escape.

I might have thought it would be the Mustang, or even the Focus. Turns out, it’s the Escape.

But the engine comes from Honda’s longer history with motorcycles. It’s an air-cooled two-cylinder single overhead-cam unit linked to a four-speed manual transmission.
