Sometime in the 1940s, a 1931 Mathis was hidden away from an invading (and looting) Axis army by being locked away atop blocks within a chateau in northern France. Seventy-two years later, the car was discovered, purchased along with two others, and now will be offered for sale at Silverstone Auctions’s Silverstone Classic sale July 29-31 in England.

Patrick Nerrant is retiring after 35 years of collecting and with his sons has decided to sell his collection at what Artcurial Motorcars is calling The D-Day Sale, scheduled for September 18 at the museum.

The Ford Mustang’s almost immediate million-unit sales stampede was amazing in the annals of the American automobile, but there were pockets in which sales fell off more quickly than dealers might have anticipated. Some 100 Colorado dealers found a solution, the High Country special edition of the pony car.

The High Country cars were available only in Colorado, and only in three colors — Columbine Blue, Timberline Green and Aspen Gold — though with any of the car’s body styles and powertrain offerings.

A friend who favors concours d’elegance and the top end of the hobby nearly snorted when I mentioned I was stopping by the Volo Auto Museum to do one of our Eye Candy stories and photo galleries.

Yes, I knew the Volo had a reputation for being as much a glorified classic car dealership as it is an automotive museum, and that many of its true museum displays feature cars (or their stunt doubles) made famous by Hollywood and those we see on big and small screens.

But what I didn’t know was how large the place is, how much else is there to see, or how much I would find myself just enjoying it all.

I saw the photo when it was included in a news release from Russo and Steele, which has the car on consignment for its upcoming collector car auction next month in Monterey, California.

Vehicles from their collection have won best of show honors at concours across the country, including four times in the past 25 years at Pebble Beach, where only the late Bill Harrah achieved a similar record and where only J.B. Nethercutt exceeded it with six such trophies.

So why is one of America’s largest and oldest annual classic car events held in one of its smallest communities? Iola, Wisconsin, has a population of 1,301 residents, neither a stoplight nor a McDonald’s, but for one weekend each year, some 120,000 people gather there to celebrate old cars, the parts that keep them running and the people who preserve them and keep viable this segment of American culture.

Why Iola? Because it’s where Chet Krause was born … well, he was born six miles to the east but was a lifetime resident until his death last month at the age of 92. It was in 1972 that Krause went to the local Lions Club and asked if he and his friends could add a car show to the club’s annual pig roast and auction.
