The inaugural ELK Charity Challenge, staged last year in California, featured a genuine Batmobile. The second edition of the Everyone Loves Kids automotive adventure rally was staged last week, featured here yesterday, and took us from Dearborn, Michigan to Lake Placid, New York.

This time, the featured vehicle was the Back to the Future DeLorean. Stephen Wynne, who owns the car and the rights to put DeLorean back into production (which he plans to do after a new U.S. limited-production vehicle regulation goes into effect; there’s a counter on the New Delorean website that’s counting down the days) couldn’t make the trip, but he sent his car anyway and it was a hit at every stop along the route.

The top-of-the-line Chrysler for 1964 was the 300K, one of the heralded letter-series cars. But not everyone needed a 360-horsepower, 413 cid Wedge V8 under the hood of their car, and Chrysler offered non-letter versions with 383 cid V8s, which also was good for more than 300 hp.

The Pick of the Day is one of those non-letter cars, a 1964 Chrysler 300, this one a Sport Hardtop, which means it’s a four-door without a B pillar to clutter up the side view.

Dan Mecum’s dad and his dad’s dad both were in the car business; his grandfather was perhaps the nation’s largest fleet vehicle dealer and his dad has a growing collector car auction company.

But among Dan’s fondest childhood memories were the times he spent riding a tractor with his maternal grandfather, a farmer.

The advertisement for this car on ClassicCars.com didn’t share as much information about the 1939 Dodge D11 Deluxe as we’d like to see — one, brief, four-sentence paragraph and only nine photos. Nonetheless, what the ad does include certainly caught my eye, and my tendency toward nostalgia.

One of the benefits of staging a collector car auction at a venue such as the Indiana State Fairgrounds is the plethora of buildings in which to display the available vehicles. With so much room, cars can be properly displayed, especially when a consignor brings a significant collection to sell.

What is likely the most unique souvenir in the history of the Indianapolis 500 — a real Indy racing car autographed by nearly 250 people who have driven in the world’s most famous race — will be auctioned Wednesday evening, May 25, to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The car is The Stinger, a contemporary racing car wearing the colors of the Marmon Wasp that carried Ray Harroun to victory in the first Indy 500 in 1911. Though the centennial of that race was held five years ago, the race this year will be the 100th running of the event, which was not held during war years.

Kia’s Sportage has grown up nicely.

I remember my first experience driving the then-new Kia crossover. It was in the mid-1990s and the drive was through a horrible lake-effect snowstorm in western Michigan. But the compact Kia’s all-wheel drive proved stunningly sure-footed when other larger vehicles were sliding off and getting stuck.

Now, here we are, a couple of decades later and the Sportage is moving into its fourth generation, now all grown up into more of a mid-size utility vehicle and has matured in style as well, offering all sorts of luxury accoutrements.
