In 1956, 14 cars — aging Auburns, Cords and Duesenbergs, and not one of them having going through what we now recognize as a restoration — were driven to Auburn, Indiana, for a homecoming-style “Parade of Classics” get-together hosted by Delmar and Doris Johnson.

A few years later, and to help raise money to save the old Auburn Automobile Company headquarters building from demolition and later to turn it into a car museum, Johnson and others convinced the local Kruse farm and real estate auction company to stage a sale of classic cars.

Yes, the row of 16 Ford GT40s along the show of Stillwater Cove was amazing and awesome, as was the adjacent array of Delahayes. But what really revved my engine last Sunday at the 66th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was the Two-Man Indianapolis Race Cars 1930-1937 class.

So I get home from Monterey Car Week and I sit down to share my memories and I reduce a couple thousand photos down to 72, which is still too many for one of our Eye Candy galleries, so I need to eliminate a few more. But in the meantime, I’m taking a break from that task to put some of my memories into writing.

When it comes down to it, what we write about here at Classic Car News is not cars, but people, because they are the ones who know and who share the stories of the cars.

I’ve been fascinated by the Ford Transit Connect ever since I did a short drive in the initial Turkish-built version that first arrived in the United States several years ago. More compact commercial vehicle than minivan, the tall and roomy trucklet seemed a more versatile and practical alternative to the typical grocery getter while also providing a great canvas for the delivery needs of the small business owner or contractor.

I liked the Transit Connect so much that last year I inquired of Ford if one equipped with seats and windows instead of delivery racks and windowless side panels might be available for my annual summertime trip, with a daughter or two and assorted grandchildren, to Florida to visit my mother.

The “best of the best” cars did very well at the auctions held during Monterey Car Week 2016 with seven selling for $10 million. But between them, those seven accounted for nearly a third of the $344.9 million in sales at the five auctions, according to preliminary figures compiled by Hagerty, the insurance and vehicle value-tracking company that has observers at each of the sales.

World record auction prices were paid on the Monterey Peninsula for American, British, French and prewar cars.

Records continued to fall at the collector car auctions Saturday on the Monterey Peninsula. Friday, RM Sotheby’s was the site of the highest prices ever paid for a British car and an American car sold at public auction. Saturday, an RM Sotheby’s bidder paid a record price for a prewar car when a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider sold for $19.8 million.

Observers from Hagerty, the insurance and vehicle valuation-tracking company, also reported what they called “another amazing result” as an alloy-bodied, long-wheelbase 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider went for $18.5 million at Gooding & Company, which also got $13.5 million for a 1960 250 GT SWB Competizione Coupe in a post-block transaction.

“Numbers are expected to climb as those auctions move higher into their dockets today and overall figures should soar Friday as Bonhams stages its one-day auction at The Quail and RM Sotheby’s opens its two-day sale in downtown Monterey.”

— Classic Car News, Friday, August 19 report from Monterey Car Week

Well, there’s a prediction that proved correct — and then some — as records were set Friday for the most ever paid at auction for both an American car and a British car, and where the star car at yet another sale also sold for a big number.

The huge numbers were posted in a packed-to-overflowing auction area in downtown Monterey, where a bidder at RM Sotheby’s reached $21.78 million for the 1954 Jaguar D-type XKD501 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and where someone ponied up $13.75 million for the first 1962 Shelby Cobra (CSX2000). Both were world auction records for cars from their respective countries.
