The Barrett-Jackson Northeast auction in Connecticut is in its second year and offers a docket of more than 600 cars. I have picked 6 very different cars from among them that I would gladly raise my hand for and like to have in my garage.

The best part about this list is that, with one exception, all these picks are what I would consider to be on the more affordable side of the hobby and any would make a good car for the first-time collector.

In 1976, Porsche had a problem: they did not have an entry-level sports car in their lineup. The 914 was being phased out and the incoming 924 was not yet ready for market. Their solution was one of the more-interesting stop-gap measures ever created.

While the mid-engine 914 was essentially history, Porsche still had a quantity of the air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engines from that car and nowhere to use them. Their master plan was to take those engines and put them into some 911s instead of their usual six-cylinder engines, thus creating a reborn, one-year generation of the previously discontinued 912.

The Elegance at Hershey is one of those events that collectors and spectators just love to attend. Part of this has to do with the incredible venue.

Held at the Hotel Hershey courtyard in eastern Pennsylvnia, the Elegance at Hershey provides a feeling of old world elegance. It is difficult to think of a better backdrop for viewing and enjoying classic automobiles.

This year not only were the cars better than before, but so were the seminars and the Grand Ascent hillclimb that opens the weekend.

If you showed up at a Porsche club meeting even 20 years ago with a 914, you likely would be viewed as barely qualifying for membership. If the car was a 914/6, well that was a bit different. But with a standard four-cylinder 914, you were basically tolerated and mostly ignored.

It’s funny how the passage of time changes people’s perspectives. During the past few years, the mid-engine Porsche 914 has had quite a renaissance, becoming a bona fide collectible Porsche right alongside the 356 and the 911. In fact, the Porsche 914 was celebrated a few years back at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, where 10 of these great little cars graced the field and drew good-sized crowds to see them.

While attending the Carlisle Import and Performance Nationals a few weeks ago, I heard about a very different kind of car show only about half-an-hour’s drive away.

After only 15 miles driving Pennsylvania back roads, a friend and I arrived at the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds, where we found a dirt oval and scores of vintage flat-head and 4-banger hot rods racing. Also taking turns on the track were riders of vintage motorcycles.

In addition of collecting cars, I am a classic motorcycle collector. While I love my classic bikes, they are not without their issues.

A few months ago I went out to my shop to fire up one of my old bikes. I tried the Norton Commando and it would not start. Next, I tried my Triumph, same story. Finally I got on my BMW and even it would not run properly. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Happily, there is a bike you can buy today that offers many of the things that a classic motorcycle offers both in looks and sound, yet is reliable and can be used as a daily rider with ease. That bike is the Harley-Davidson.

By the mid-1970s, the MGB was getting long in the tooth. The sports car had grown heavier due to DOT crash regulations, which included awkward rubber bumpers front and rear, and slower due to EPA emissions regulations. But the British automaker had no money for a redesign or to substantially upgrade any part of the car to bring the poor MGB’s performance even up to the level from when it was introduced.

The annual Carlisle Import and Performance is a show that is a bit different from others on the classic car calendar. It celebrates marques that most other shows ignore.

The stars of this show are Saab, Volvo, TVR, Citroen, Renault, Fiat, Opel, Lancia, and Audi. Groups of such vehicles are on a show field that also includes Porsche, Jaguar, Triumph, MG, Datsun/Nissan, Honda, Land Rover, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes. Basically, everyone is welcome.

Porsche, one of the most storied marques in the world, has had tremendous racing success and its cars are some of the most desired and coveted. From the company’s original 356, though the 911 series, and all the way to the landmark 918 Spider, Porsches are something that just about every sports car fan sees as an integral part of a collection.

Despite this history, the company has made a few model missteps, cars that were too different from what the traditional Porsche buyer expected. But unlike most Porsche fans, and I have owned a passel of 911s, I believe that all Porsche cars are special. Some of their best cars are the ones that broke the mold of what people consider a Porsche to be.

Getting a car accepted to show at a top concours d’elegance such as Pebble Beach or Amelia Island is quite a difficult endeavor to pull off. You need a coachbuilt car to start with, and you need a car from a marque that is well-respected.

Those ingredients add up to a car that can cost quite a bit of money, in the realm of many hundreds of thousands of dollars, which makes the climb to entry for these events quite steep.

A popular activity for vintage sports car collectors is taking their cars on rallies and tours, often covering some of the most fun and scenic roads in the United States. To participate in such events, one needs to possess a vintage sports car, generally one from 1972 or earlier.

Ferraris, Jaguars and Porsches are often seen on these events, although they are expensive and sometime fragile, which can result in reliability issues that can consume a driver’s enjoyment of the cross-country tour. And parts for an exotic vintage car are hard to source in rural areas.

The values of certain cars in the classic car hobby don’t always make a lot of sense.

Take, for instance, the Triumph TR4. The most valuable TR4 roadsters are the later TR4A cars that have independent rear suspension. On the surface, this would make sense as you would think that having IRS would be an improvement over the earlier live-axle models.

Buying a new BMW is always a pretty special experience. To some it is a chance to move up to the next level of BMW performance cars and to others it is the realization of a dream come true.

There are many ways to buy your first, or perhaps it’s your next new BMW vehicle. You can go to the dealer and buy the one in stock that you like most. If you have a bit more money and time you can opt for a European delivery, order your car and turn it into a vacation at the same time.

There is also a third option that falls somewhere in between.

The Alfa Romeo Spider had one of the longest running product lifespans of any sports car. Introduced in 1966 as the Duetto, it was immortalized by Dustin Hoffman, who drove it in the movie The Graduate.

As time passed, the car lost much of its stunning looks while struggling to comply with federal crash regulations, such as receiving larger and uglier non-integrated bumpers to comply with federal rules.

When Chevrolet introduced the third-generation Camaro in 1982, it was a serious upgrade compared with the car it replaced. The second-generation Camaro was introduced in 1970, and with each passing year, it grew heavier, slower and more cobbled together. It was a car that needed a makeover, and the 1982 model accomplished this by bringing back some modicum of engine performance, terrific handling and a great modern look.

The star of the Camaro lineup was the Z28, and the Pick of The Day is one of the first-year cars, a 1982 Camaro Z28 located in Ontario, Canada.

Italian sports cars have a certain intangible something that those from other countries are lacking. It is not so much the engineering or the style as it is the way in which all the parts are put together, and which makes them so much more than the sum of those parts. Somewhere during the assembly process, Italian cars seem to get a sort of soul, which makes them very special.

The cost of entry for these cars can be very expensive, and well-heeled collectors line up for the opportunity to buy the best examples of rare Italian cars, and for very serious money.

There is something magical about a sports or GT car with a V12 under its hood. The V12 is the mythic engine layout that has won hundreds of races, used in everything from F1 cars to some of the most famous sports cars in the world.

As a result, cars powered by V12 engines also are some of the most expensive collector cars available. An entry-level Ferrari V12 will cost you at least $70,000, while other V12 cars, even modern Aston Martins, will leave you with little change left from that amount.

You might have noticed that in the past few years, air-cooled Porsches have had a serious boost in value. Not just 356 and 911 sports cars either; even more pedestrian models such as the 914 have followed suit. This spillover has started to move towards alternative rear-engine, air-cooled cars, including many Volkswagen models and recently, the Chevrolet Corvair.

The compact Corvair was built from 1960 to 1969 in two different series, and there were various sub models with different engine and trim options. Among the most desirable were the turbocharged models, called the Corvair Spyder in the first series and in the second series, renamed the Corsa.

Every once in a great while, a large automotive manufacturer really shows what it can do and builds a limited-production model that is the best car the company is able to produce. The automaker is not limited by either marketing or cost constraints, and gets to build a very cool car.

Some that come to mind are the Dodge Viper, the Porsche Carrera GT and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. These are all great cars, but my all-time favorite is the BMW Z8 sports car, built from 1999 until 2003. This was a revelation for BMW, a car that looked back at everything that was truly great in the company’s history and combined that with what is exceptional about what they do now.

Today, Ferrari is a name brand as big as Coca-Cola or McDonalds. But in the 1970s, it was very much a niche brand known only by the few who had one of the fantastic cars from Maranello or the true car crazy people like me who lived and died by the words written in Road & Track magazine.

This all changed in 1980 when Ferrari put together the best serialized television commercial ever created with the launch of the TV show Magnum P.I. The strength of the Ferrari brand today, I feel, would never have happened if it wasn’t for Magnum and the Ferrari 308 GTS that starred alongside Tom Selleck. This to many people is the seminal Ferrari that they picture in their heads. Pretty astounding since the show went off the air in 1988.
