Every once in a great while, a large automotive manufacturer really shows what it can do and builds a limited-production model that is the best car the company is able to produce. The automaker is not limited by either marketing or cost constraints, and gets to build a very cool car.

Some that come to mind are the Dodge Viper, the Porsche Carrera GT and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. These are all great cars, but my all-time favorite is the BMW Z8 sports car, built from 1999 until 2003. This was a revelation for BMW, a car that looked back at everything that was truly great in the company’s history and combined that with what is exceptional about what they do now.

Today, Ferrari is a name brand as big as Coca-Cola or McDonalds. But in the 1970s, it was very much a niche brand known only by the few who had one of the fantastic cars from Maranello or the true car crazy people like me who lived and died by the words written in Road & Track magazine.

This all changed in 1980 when Ferrari put together the best serialized television commercial ever created with the launch of the TV show Magnum P.I. The strength of the Ferrari brand today, I feel, would never have happened if it wasn’t for Magnum and the Ferrari 308 GTS that starred alongside Tom Selleck. This to many people is the seminal Ferrari that they picture in their heads. Pretty astounding since the show went off the air in 1988.

A vintage British roadster can be an expensive proposition both to buy and to service, especially if it has a six-cylinder engine. A typical Jaguar E-Type in driver-level condition costs a minimum of around $50,000, and even an Austin Healey 3000 will run you north of $35,000 for any car that can be driven immediately.

Happily, there is a six-cylinder British roadster that’s still affordable, the Triumph TR6, which offers about 60 percent in performance of an E-Type for as low as 20 percent of the price.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Camaro, an event being celebrated at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March. With that in mind, the Pick of the Day is a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 located in Fairfield, Ohio.

Model year 1974 was a watershed time for cars in the U.S. with new federal emissions and safety regulations. It was also the year that Ford delivered the downsized Mustang II and really started focusing more on economy than performance. Happily, Chevrolet did not follow suit and still offered the full-size Camaro with the V8-powered Z28 version for those of us who wanted a performance car.

One of my favorite things about the collector car hobby is finding a car that was once very expensive and buying it at the bottom of its depreciation cycle. I have done this quite few times, and in every case, I ended up driving a great car that increased in value over my ownership so that when I sold it, I had essentially owned it for free.

Lately, I have been looking closely at the Bentley Continental R coupe built from 1991 until 2002. Over that period, Bentley built only 1,236 of them, and when new, they cost northward of $300,000.

A few days ago, I got a message from a friend about a car he was looking for. It was a car that I had not thought about for quite awhile, the 1968 Ford Mustang California Special. Somehow these often overlooked pony cars are still affordable, having not experienced the run up in price that has happened to every other classic Mustang.

The Pick of the Day is a 1968 Ford Mustang California Special in Seafood Green with a Gold Ivory interior. Located in Miami, its options include GT Cyclone Wheels, Shelby style hood with hood locks, fiberglass Shelby-style side scoops, Shelby-style trunk lid with spoiler, blacked out grille with fog lamps, and racing-style fuel cap.

Usually it is really easy for me to find a Pick of the Day, but today I tried something different. I wanted to find a very special car that could be bought for a bargain price. My pick is this stunning 1976 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, a magnificent luxury automobile offered for the cost of an average new car.

John Thornley, the chairman of MG Car Company, always wanted to create a more budget-minded version of the Aston Martin DB4. His first attempt was the MGB GT, a two-door hatchback model based on the popular MGB roadster. But it was his second attempt, the MGC GT, that really nailed it.

When the MGC with its inline-6 engine was introduced, it was not well-received by the motoring press, and considered by many to be the less-nimble big brother of the four-cylinder MGB. They cited poorer handling and a lack of adequate power to motivate the extra weight of the car. It did not help that, reportedly, all the test cars initially provided by MG had tires holding only 20 psi of air pressure; they should have had 36 psi.

Over the years, RM Sotheby’s Arizona Auction at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix has consistently featured cars that are right in the middle of the pulse of current market conditions.

This year is no different, with much of the inventory being either up-and-coming collector cars or serious muscle cars. Of course, these are mixed in with the usual assortment of high-value classics. RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale is one of my favorites of the year.

Bonhams is celebrating its fourth year in Scottsdale, and this year’s selection of cars is the best the venerable auction house has ever had here in the desert, as well as being among the best offerings of any of the seven auction companies working Arizona Car Week. This includes my second-favorite car ever offered for sale at any auction anywhere.

As always is the case, Bonhams has a bit of something for every price level, and my picks of cars that I would most want to take home reflect that.

1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce
This beautiful gray Alfa Giulietta is one of the nicer restorations I have ever seen. Not usually my favorite color on these cars, but combined with the red seats, it works wonderfully. I have enough time behind the wheel of these Alfas to know that the driving experience is amazing, and this car is so nice that I would keep it forever.
1958 Alfa Spider
1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88
Those who know me are thinking, “Seriously, a C3 Corvette on a list of cars you want?” Well, seriously, the stigma of the C3 is gone and an L88 is truly a weapons-grade sports car, likely able to keep up with and then easily pass any 275 GTB/4 Ferrari on a vintage rally, and likely to cause much consternation in the process. This car is a great example, and I asked a friend, Bonhams specialist Steffan Frisk, to fire it up. The sound was exciting and immediately made me want it.
1969 L88
2003 Aston Martin Vanquish
The gentleman’s alternative to the L88 Vette, a Vanquish has been on my list for a long time. This example with only 15k miles and in a great black color just ticks all the boxes. These cars are on the rise and I want to buy one before they double in value.
Aston Vanquish
1956 Porsche Speedster
I love Speedsters, especially the early cars with the beehive taillights. The first Porsche I ever drove was a ‘56 Speedster, and it has stuck with me over the years. This Aquamarine Blue Metallic car is an extremely well-restored No. 1 condition car that I would personally love to drive into a No. 2 condition car.
1956 Porsche speedster
1952 Ferrari 340 America
This Ferrari represents the beginning of the marque’s long and storied racing history. It competed in the 1952 Mille Miglia, the 24 Hours of Le mans, and the Targa Florio. It was a factory team car and was driven my Taruffi, Trintignant and Bracco. It is eligible for any and all concours and vintage-racing events and rallies, aside from London to Brighton. How much better does it get in a single car?
1952 Ferrari 340 America
1963 Iso Rivolta
These are the easiest-to-live-with Italian GT cars ever built, with stunning Italian coachwork combined with a reliable Chevrolet Corvette powertrain. This Iso Rivalto has a manual transmission and is a great example of a truly world class GT car. A Iso Rivolta like this in a great color combination of silver paint with maroon leather would make a tour car par excellence. I loved this gentleman express.
iso
1977 Honda Civic CVCC
This little yellow Civic is the nicest example I have seen since they were new. It needs nothing, and if entered would likely win Best of Show at ClassicCars.com’s Future Classics car show. It is easier to find a really nice Ferrari California Spider for sale than it is a Civic as nice as this one. This is a future classic that is guaranteed to increase in value while it sips very little gas.
honda
1984 Ferrari 308 GTS QV
Sure it is a 308, but this Ferrari is one of the cars used in one of my favorite TV shows, Magnum P.I. This is the car that is one of my all-time favorite auction cars, second only to the DB5 form the movie Goldfinger. I will in fact be bidding on it, but I expect it to sell for much more than I am willing to spend. I will be test driving it Wednesday to see if it is everything that I hoped it would be.

One of the most enjoyable classic cars I have ever owned was my Volvo 1800S. I restored that car, made two cross-country trips, took it to shows, participated in rallies, and used it during Monterey, California, car week. The Volvo combines stunning early 1960s European styling with reliable mechanicals. It does not get any better for me.

The car was a 1936 Lancia Astura, one of either four or six such cars built, depending on which source you cite, and was a nice restoration of a car originally designed by Pininfarina. The car was formerly the property of guitar legend Eric Clapton and was a car that he loved owning.
