In Arizona, bids on 911s, E-types show changing marketplace

A Jaguar E-type on the block at Gooding & Company sale Friday | Andy Reid photos

Hagerty, the classic car insurance and price-tracking company that supplies our daily Arizona Auction Week sales figures, notes that it has an eye on how the market has shifted in comparison with the same sales a year ago. Today, it looks at sales of the Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-type.

A 911 is up for bidding

“With 911s, older cars including S models and Turbos are selling for less than they did a year ago in Arizona,” Hagerty’s report for Saturday notes. “Meanwhile, 1985-89 Carrera 3.2 coupes and 993s are performing better than a year ago.

“A similar phenomenon is occurring for Jaguar E-types. Seventy percent of Flat Floor roadsters at auction in 2015 were bid to amounts above the $235K that Gooding’s example achieved. Other Series I cars are off their pace of a year ago too. Series III cars, on the other hand, are selling for higher amounts than 2015.”

Hagerty has personnel monitoring each of the auction venues and reports prices that include the buyers’ premium fees.

Overall so far this month in Arizona, total sales have been $160.2 million, more than $27 million less than a year ago. However, 2015 figures included the massive sale at Barrett-Jackson of Ron Pratte’s huge car collection.

Note also that the $9.9 million sale Friday at RM Sotheby’s of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster was the most ever paid at an Arizona auction for any classic car.
