The classic car auction empire that is RM Sotheby’s just keeps getting bigger.
Ian Kellehrer, car specialist for the classic car auction house, just announced at Sotheby’s headquarters in New York City that RM Sotheby’s has consigned to the flagship Monterey sale one of the largest and most significant single-owner collections ever to be offered at auction.
The collection, named ‘The Pinnacle Portfolio: A rare collective of automotive distinction,” is made up of approximately 30 post-war sports cars, each representing a key milestone in automotive design, engineering and performance. Included is everything from the most iconic and important sports and racing automobiles of the 1950s and ‘60s to a selection of high-performance contemporary supercars.
The value of the offering certainly exceeds any other private automobile collection ever sold at auction.
This addition to the Monterey sale will push the RM Sotheby’s event from a two-day to a three-day event, with the sale now running August 13 – 15. The Pinnacle Portfolio will be offered during an exclusive, standalone auction on Thursday, August 13, much as RM did with the Woody collection a few years back.
According to Shelby Myers, RM Sotheby’s car specialist, “While many of the world’s most impressive collections were established in the public eye of the car-collecting world, The Pinnacle Portfolio was assembled with a clandestine, surgical precision unlike any other that has come to market.
“Its almost obsessive focus on perfection, rarity, and the superlative, irrespective of price, makes it the most significant and valuable private collection of motor cars ever presented at auction,”
Included in the collection are:
- An alloy-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing,
- A 1964 Ferrari 250 LM,
- A 1998 McLaren F1 “The Road Going LM,”
- A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider,
- A 2005 Ferrari Enzo,
- A bookend pair of Bugatti Veyrons
If there were questions that RM Sotheby’s was the leader in the high-end collector car world, they should be quieted with this announcement.
