’70 ’Cuda convertible stars at Mecum auction in Monterey

The 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda convertible was originally presented to the car’s designer | Mecum Auctions

“One of the most coveted muscle cars of its time” is how Mecum Auctions describes the 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda convertible that will play a starring role in next week’s “Daytime Auction” in Monterey, California.

Because not only is the car one of just 14 Hemi ’Cuda convertibles produced in 1970, and one of only nine built with automatic transmissions, this ’Cuda was the executive demonstrator presented by Plymouth to its young designer, John Heritz, for his personal use. Under the hood is a powerful 426 cid Hemi V8.

The fully optioned car in triple black is well-documented and professionally restored, Mecum says, and carries a pre-auction estimate usually reserved for rare European sports cars and luxury antiques: $2.5 million to $3 million.

The Mecum auction takes place August 12-15 at Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa – Del Monte Golf Course, with 18 hours broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, and live streaming of the entire event presented on Mecum’s website.
