A 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster brought $1.3 million at French auction house Artcurial’s inaugural sale in Hong Kong, where the two-day sale was held earlier this week in conjunction with another auction company, Spink & Sons of England.

The 300 SL was one of the last produced and had been owned by the same family from 1965 until 2013.

The sale focused on comics but included other art objects and the one car. Overall sales were $8.2 million.

“We are thrilled by the results achieved at our inaugural auction in association with Spink,” Isabelle Bresset, Artcurial director and the auctioneer for the sale, said in a news release. “The strong prices and breaking records set throughout the 2-day auction reinforce Artcurial’s appeal to international and Asian buyers. As part of our international strategy, we now look forward to providing tailor-made services to Asian collectors.”

“We are very pleased with the nearly sell-out comics auction, first of its kind in Hong Kong,” added Eric Leroy, Artcurial’s comics specialist.

The auction preview drew 700 collectors and connoisseurs.
