The game of golf will intrude on the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2018 because, after all, the world-famous concours is held on a golf course.
Next year, the gathering of great vintage vehicles and well-dressed people will take place on the fourth Sunday of the month, August 26, rather than the customary third Sunday, to make way for the United States Amateur Championship, August 13-19, on the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The concours, which will mark its 68th year in 2018, is held on the scenic 18th fairway of the seaside course, and it was decided that hitting golf balls around very-expensive collector cars was probably not a good idea.
The movement of the concours will mean the entire weeklong Monterey Car Week series of car auctions and shows, parties and other events will have to move back a week as well. The car week includes seven major car auctions, at last count, as well as such large-scale events as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway; Legends of the Autobahn; Concorso Italiano; The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering; Concours on the Avenue in Carmel; Porsche Werks reunion; and others.
“Pebble Beach Resorts began with a scenic drive, and golf soon followed – and it now hosts top-ranking events for people with many diverse passions,” Concours chairman Sandra Button said in the news release. “Coordinating calendars can be complicated, but we want to make certain that everyone has a chance to enjoy the beautiful place that is Pebble Beach.”
Fortunately, this year’s Pebble Beach Concours and, therefore, Monterey Car Week will stay put, with the concours taking place Sunday, August 20 as the culmination of all the events that come before. After the 2018 switch, the concours will resume its usual third-Sunday-of-August placement.
