A 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider was named best of show at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este held Sunday at the historic resort on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy.
The ruby-red Alfa sports car, styled by Zagato, arrived in Italy fresh from taking best of show honors at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March.
Owned by David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California, the Spider won Best of Show, Sport d’Elegance at the Amelia Island concours in Florida, sharing the victory in Amelia’s customary fashion with the Best of Show, Concours d’Elegance winner, a 1929 Cord L-29. At Villa d’Este, it took the Trofeo BMW Group award, so named for the event’s co-sponsor.
At Villa d’Este, the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este prize, decided by popular vote, was won by a 1950 Ferrari 166M Barchetta. In the Concept Cars and Prototypes competition, a Bentley Exp 10 Speed Six coupé won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award. In the classic motorcycle competition, a Münch-4 TTS-E won the top prize.
The Concorso started in 1929 with a beauty contest for rare and valuable cars. The 2015 event marks the 11th modern concours d’elegance at the venue. As well as serving as a showcase for superb vintage cars and motorcycles, Villa d’Este also hosts the showing of up-to-the-minute prototypes and concept vehicles.
Other features this year included “Seventies Style – the Jet Set is Back,” 90 years of the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the 40th anniversary of the BMW 3-Series, and a display of BMW Art Cars created by some of the world’s greatest fine artists.
